Social Studies Curriculum

 

Social Studies courses are designed to acquaint the student with the manner and matter of the social sciences, and to provide a fund of knowledge and background flexible enough to be advantageous to all students.

 

Requirements: The state of Connecticut requires all students to successfully pass at least one semester of civics and one year of United States History.

Freshmen at the Career and College Prep levels should take a successfully complete We the People I and II in the ninth grade; student at the Honors level must successfully complete Honors Civics in the Formation of the American Republic in the second semester of the tenth grade to fulfill the state civics requirement.

 

Recommendations:

It is recommended that 9th, 10th, 11th graders select the required social studies courses for their level each semester.  At the career level 9th graders should select Civics, Global Studies for the 10th grade, and US History in the 11th grade. At the college prep level, the students should take Civics in the 9th grade, World History in the 10th grade, and US history in the 11th grade. Students at the honors level should select honors World History in the 9th grade and the 1st semester of the 10th grade, should select honors Civics in the Formation of the American Republic in the 2nd semester of the 10th grade., Advanced Placement US History in the 11th grade and Humanities in the 12th grade.

 

Juniors and seniors may elect Teens at Law and the Advanced Placement US History.

 

Seniors may elect: Sociology, Contemporary Issues, AP European History and Philosophy.

HONORS WORLD HISTORY I

WE THE PEOPLE I

This is a mandatory freshmen course in civics and government offered at the Career and College Prep levels. It is an interdisciplinary yearlong program whose substance is drawn from the areas of political science, political philosophy, psychology, history, economics, sociology, jurisprudence, and service learning. Emphasis is placed on essay writing, problem solving, community service, and data collection, as well as class participation.  

Note: This course is meant to be offered primarily for 9thgrade at the career and college prep levels (two different offerings)

WORLD HISTORY I

This course examines the foundation and development of the human societies from the Paleolithic Age to the fall of the Roman Empire. Through a thematic comparative approach students will gain and understanding of the complex processes underlying the development of human civilizations. Students will also be given opportunities to study regional cultures of their interest. 

 

 

GLOBAL STUDIES I

All aspects of culture will be explored in this regional approach to the study of the world. Students will participate in the selection of the areas of the world to be studied, as well as the aspects of culture covered during the semester program. Potential areas include Africa, South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, Latin America and Canada, the Middle East, and Europe and Eurasia.

This program is directed towards 10th grade career level student. It may be taken in the 1st semester, 2nd semester (#0123), or both as different area studies will be covered. 

 

 

TEENS AND THE LAW

In this course, the rights and responsibilities of young people are explored.  Activities center around an examination of the courts, the police, and the prisons.

 

 

AMERICA AT THE MIDPOINT

Beginning with the administration of George Washington, students will study the social, economic, and political development of the U.S. including the War of 1812, the Civil War, the growth of industry, business and labor, and the Spanish American War.  Failure to turn in a research paper by the last day of the academic year will result in 0 credit for both English III and America at the Midpoint and America in the Modern Age.

 

 

AP U.S. HISTORY I

HONORS PHILOSOPHY

Prerequisite: To be accepted into this honors level program the student must have obtained at least a C average in his/her 11th grade honors level social studies course or at least a B in his/her 11th grade college prep level social studies course and the department chairŐs approval.

This introductory course examines Plato and Aristotle and surveys main trends in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and logic. Students study PlatoŐs Republic and AristotleŐs Nicomachean Ethics as well as selections from other influential Western philosophers.

 

 

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES

This course will deal with problems encountered in daily living. It is geared to provide students with the opportunity to think and talk about the world and its problems. Class discussion will be an integral part of this course.

 

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EUROPEAN HISTORY

Prerequisite: to be accepted into this honors level program the student must have obtained at least a C average in his/her Honors level 11th grade program or at least a B+ average in his/her 11th grade college prep social studies course and the department chairŐs approval. Students signing up for AP European History 1 should do so with the intention of taking both semesters of the program, as well as taking the AP European HistoryŐs examination in the spring.

This program serves as a full year introductory course in European History from c. 1450 to the present and prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement examination for possible college credit. Questions on intellectual-cultural, political-diplomatic and social-economic history form the basis for the program and examination.

This follow-up program to World History I covers subjects from the French Revolution to the present, emphasizing the concepts and events that shape our world today. Again, a truly global approach is stressed.

This program will present the history of the United States from the turn-of-the century to the present. Such topics as the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, The New Deal, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Cold War, and recent American History will be covered through social, political, and economic means. Failure to turn in a research paper by the last day of the academic year will result in 0 credit for both English III and America at the Midpoint and America in the Modern Age.

SOCIOLOGY

Sociology is the study of society and culture with an emphasis on behavior in groups. The focus is on the ever changing roles, norms, and status of males, females, and adolescents in our culture, as well as the evolving institutions of marriage, family, and education. The approach is to compare and contrast the adolescent sub-cultures of the 1950Ős through the 1990Ős.

This course examines the development of the modern world from1500 to the present. Students gain a greater respect for world cultures, as well as their roles as world citizens. They will also be given opportunities to study regional cultures of their interest as well as current events.
