Music Curriculum

 

The music curriculum offers a wide variety of musical experiences for students. Courses in the mechanics and history of music are available to students as well as the opportunity to participate in high-quality performing groups.

 

First-Semester Courses

MUSIC APPRECIATION

#0040 - Level I

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

 

The connection of music and its importance in our world, to human life and living. This approach is primarily sociological rather than historical. The focus is upon the use and value of music in people's lives.

 

 

MUSIC THEATRE

#0028 - Level I

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

 

A study of the actors, musicians, and backstage technicians' duties will be incorporated in a musical production in which all members of the course must participate. The structure and history of drama and music will also be studied. The principle aim of this course is to increase the students' appreciation of the musical theatre.

 

 

MUSIC THEORY I

#0025 - Level I

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

 

The study of the mechanics of music including notation, intervals, scales, chords, keys and rhythm. Basic music analysis, ear training and sight singing are included in the course.

MUSIC THEORY II

# 0021 - Level I

Grades, 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite:  Music Theory I or approval of the department instructor.

 

This course allows students to continue their progress in Music Theory, including traditional four part writing, more in depth analysis, advanced ear training and sight singing, and basic composition and arranging.

Performing Organizations

 

Participation in any of the performing groups obligates students to be available for all local public performances.

 

 

CONCERT BAND

#0031 - Level I -  1 Credit

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Successful participation in the Morgan or Eliot Concert Band last year or approval of the instrumental instructor.

 

Band is a study of music literature, history, style, and theory through rehearsals, individual practice and performances. The band will perform in a concert setting at least three times during the school year. The Morgan Band also participates in the Clinton Memorial Day Parade. These four performances are mandatory for members of the Morgan Band. Some solo opportunities may be available, auditions may be required at the discretion of the director. Students wishing to participate in extracurricular instrumental activities like the Shoreline Music Festivals, New England Music Festival, or band activities like Pep Band or Jazz Band need to be members of the Morgan Concert Band.

 

 

CONCERT CHORUS

#0034 - Level 1 - 1 Credit

#0035 Ð Level 1 Ð ½ Credit

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

 

Participation in the Morgan Chorus will provide basic knowledge of vocal productions and exposure to a wide variety of choral repertoire. The Morgan Chorus will perform in a concert setting at least three times during the school year as well as at the Morgan Commencement Ceremonies. These four performances are mandatory for members of the Morgan Chorus. Some solo opportunities mat be available, auditions may be required may be available, auditions may be required as the discretion of the director. Students wishing to participate in extracurricular choral activities like the Shoreline Music Festivals, New England Music Festival need to be members of the Morgan Chorus.
