Art Curriculum

 

The art curriculum is designed to help students understand and appreciate the importance of art in our culture.  A sequential program of instruction is offered to provide students with a solid foundation in the principles of art as well as experience with a wide range of media and techniques.

 

1st Semester Courses

(1/2 Credit)

                                                                           

ART BASICS A

 This course introduces students to the art program and provides them with an understanding of the elements and principles of design while sampling various disciplines such as painting, sculpture, printmaking and crafts.

 

 

DRAWING AND PAINTING I

#0805 Ð 1st semester/ #0806 Ð 2nd semester

Students will receive instruction on the important basics of drawing and painting such as contour line, shading, perspective, composition and color theory.  Students will use pencil, ink, watercolor, tempera paint, pastels and acrylics to create portraits, still life, landscape and abstract art work.

 

 

SCULPTURE A

Form, balance, and tension are characteristics of sculpture that students will become acquainted with as they try additive and subtractive methods. Students will use wire, paper-mache, plaster, clay, stone and wood. Emphasis will be on personal expression and problem solving.

 

 

EXPERIMENTAL ART

This is an enjoyable class for serious students. Re-live your childhood by playing with paint, making your own brushes, experimenting and exploring new ways to sculpt and draw. Printmaking, crafts and ceramics will be part of the class also.

 

 

DRAWING AND PAINTING II

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting I

Students are given more complex drawing and painting assignments and will be expected to apply the concepts learned in their previous painting class to conceive and create original artwork.

 

 

ADVANCED DRAWING AND PAINTING

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting II

This class is designed for the serious and self-motivated student who would like to further his/her study of drawing and painting. Each student will choose assignments which best meet his/her individual needs as practicing artists.

ART BASICS B

This course is a continuation of Art Basics I.

GRAPHIC ARTS

This course explores the fundamentals of visual communication especially in the field of advertising. Students will learn about combining layout, typography, and slogans to communicate a message visually. Poster, magazine advertisements, and logos are examples of assigned projects.
